How to Show Up in AI Search in 2026
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity now answer questions before anyone clicks a link. Here is how small businesses get mentioned in those answers.

Search looks different in 2026. Google shows AI Overviews and AI Mode at the top of many results, and more people ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity for recommendations directly. These tools still pull from the web, so the businesses they mention are the ones with clear, trustworthy, easy-to-read websites.
Optimizing for these answers is often called generative engine optimization (GEO). The good news is that most of it is classic SEO done well.
Answer real questions directly
AI tools look for pages that answer a question clearly. For each service you offer, write a page that covers:
- What the service is and who it's for
- Where you offer it
- What it costs, or what affects the price
- How long it takes and what happens next
Put the direct answer near the top in plain language, then add the details below.
Use structured data
Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools exactly who you are. At minimum, every small business site should have:
- Organization or LocalBusiness schema with your name, phone, address, and social profiles
- Service schema for what you sell, with prices where it makes sense
- FAQPage schema on pages with common questions
- BlogPosting schema on articles, with author and dates
Keep your details consistent everywhere
AI tools cross-check facts. If your website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, and directories all list the same name, phone number, and services, you look like a real, established business. Conflicting details make you easier to skip.
Let AI crawlers in
Check your robots.txt and make sure you are not blocking crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended unless you have a reason to. If they can't read your site, they can't cite it.
Some sites also publish an llms.txt file: a short plain-text summary of the business and its key pages. It's still an emerging convention, but it's quick to add.
Earn mentions beyond your website
AI answers lean on sources other people trust: reviews, local news, industry directories, and community sites. Ask customers for reviews, get listed in the directories that matter for your industry, and share useful content where your customers already spend time.
Keep content fresh
Add a "last updated" date to important pages and actually update them when prices, services, or details change. Fresh, accurate pages are more likely to be used in answers.
The short version
Clear answers, structured data, consistent details, open access for crawlers, and a good reputation off your site. That's how you get mentioned in AI search. Want us to check how your site looks to AI tools? Let's talk.
